A title retained at Weymouth
Jamie Tylecote won the 2026 RYA Harken Youth Match Racing Championship for a second consecutive year. The event took place at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy on 27–28 June.
Six teams of sailors aged 23 and under competed aboard Elliott 6M keelboats. The format offered young competitors experience in close-quarters, head-to-head racing.
An unbeaten crew
Tylecote sailed with Millie Deacon, Issy Leetch and Terry Hacker and did not lose a match during the championship. Teams from Southampton University Sailing Club provided strong competition.
The result records the weekend’s match-racing outcome rather than a broader ranking of all young sailors. Different racing formats require distinct skills and tactics.
Learning alongside competition
The programme included a training afternoon, racing debriefs and opportunities to speak with umpires. Some sailors were moving from dinghies into keelboat and match racing.
Understanding the racing rules is part of success when yachts meet on short tactical courses. Instruction and feedback help turn a competition into a learning experience.
A possible next step for club sailors
A small keelboat can be a manageable way to explore team roles and tactical racing after dinghy experience. Suitable local clubs or class programmes can provide a structured introduction.
