A dog can enjoy time on the water when the trip is planned around the animal rather than simply making room beside the paddler. Hobie's Mirage Compass Duo offers two seats, separate pedal stations and deck space for a modest, sheltered-water outing with an appropriately prepared pet.
Check that the boat and pet fit
Hobie Japan explicitly identifies the tandem as suitable for outings with family and pets. Its 4.11-metre hull is 89 centimetres wide and has a published total capacity of 215.46 kilograms, including the people, animal and all gear.
A two-person capacity does not establish that every dog will be comfortable or remain settled aboard. A large or nervous animal may be better served by a short shore-based acclimatisation session before any launch.
Keep the deck straightforward
The boat has one MirageDrive 180 and one MirageDrive GT, along with gear storage and H-Tracks. Unsecured leads, hooks or bags should not interfere with the pedals, rudder or the animal's resting place.
A correctly fitted canine flotation aid, drinking water and shade are practical parts of the outing. The animal should never be tethered in a way that could trap it if the kayak overturns.
Build a gentle route
A short circuit close to a familiar landing keeps the day flexible if the dog becomes unsettled. Both paddlers should agree who controls the boat and who attends to the animal during boarding and recovery.
Some rental operators allow one pet under their own terms, but that does not override the rules of every waterway or other provider. Check wildlife restrictions and dog access before visiting.
Know when to return
A wet or tired dog may need a break much earlier than the humans want one. Watch the animal's behaviour, offer a calm landing and avoid hot or exposed weather.
