An open day may be the first time someone enters a sailing club, and the way they are welcomed ashore can matter as much as the first few minutes afloat. A modest dinghy fleet can introduce visitors to a sport without making every newcomer feel they must already know the terminology.

Make the arrival easy
Clear signs, a meeting point and an explanation of changing facilities remove unnecessary uncertainty. Volunteers should know who can answer questions about age groups, access needs, lessons and membership.
An introductory activity needs a suitably qualified organiser and appropriate safety cover. A dinghy model in a photograph is not proof that an individual event has those arrangements.
Show what happens before launching
A Hartley H12.2 illustrates the sort of small craft a visitor might encounter at a club. Demonstrating how a boat is rigged can make its parts less mysterious before anyone climbs aboard.
A student should hear about flotation, weather limitations and recovery procedures in language they understand. The boat selected for a session must match their needs and the conditions.
Give non-sailors a place in the day
Tea, a shore picnic, a tour of the clubhouse or help with ordinary setup tasks can make accompanying relatives feel included. Nobody needs to sign up immediately or pretend to enjoy sailing to be welcome.
Volunteers should also have realistic breaks and responsibilities. A good community event does not depend on the same person handling every job.
Provide a clear next step
Offer accurate details for beginners’ courses or future taster sessions and explain any costs without pressure. A friendly farewell can do more for a club than a complicated sales pitch.
