Garmin has begun rolling out free updates across selected watches and cycling computers, including fall detection on the Venu 4 and hands-free controls for active weekends on and off the water.
A smartwatch may spend one part of a weekend recording a run and another tracking a walk from the marina to a beach. Garmin has announced a software release that broadens selected everyday and fitness functions without requiring a new device purchase.
The September updates cover compatible watches from the fēnix 8, Forerunner, Venu and vívoactive families, as well as some Edge cycling computers. The available features vary by model and rollout status.
Venu 4 gains a fall-detection option
Garmin says the Venu 4 can now detect a hard fall and message preset assistance contacts with a live location. The function requires a paired smartphone and appropriate setup, so it is not a standalone satellite rescue service.
Owners can configure it for all-day monitoring or selected activities. A device alert may add reassurance, but it cannot be relied upon to detect every incident or replace an agreed safety plan.
Voice functions reduce button presses
Selected compatible watches also gain hands-free commands for tasks such as starting a timer or activity and using a watch flashlight. Some commands can link through a paired phone to its virtual assistant.
Running features include quick workout suggestions and updated Run Coach plans, while compatible Edge cycling devices get refinements to an enduro riding profile. These changes speak to an outdoor routine that is broader than boating alone.
Check the model before updating
The free software is rolling out through Garmin Connect, automatic device updates and Garmin Express. Owners should review the model-specific list rather than assume that every advertised function appears on every watch.
