Seventy miles changes everything

Dry Tortugas National Park lies approximately 70 miles west of Key West. The route offers open-water sailing, clear tropical seas and Fort Jefferson's enormous brick walls rising from Garden Key, but it is not a casual dayboat destination. There are no roads to the park and no fuel, food or drinking water available for private visitors once they arrive.

Visitors can travel on a concession ferry, by seaplane or aboard a suitable private or permitted charter vessel. Bringing a private boat offers more flexibility to visit parts of the park beyond Garden Key, but only for crews with the correct boat, offshore experience, weather window, equipment and passage plan.

Make the return part of the passage plan

An offshore trip must be planned in both directions. The outward voyage may be pleasant while the return becomes uncomfortable or unsafe if the weather changes. Weather forecasts, fuel reserves, navigation, crew endurance and communications all deserve attention long before leaving Key West.

The National Park Service warns that storms and strong winds can occur in the surrounding waters. A vessel whose range is just sufficient in flat conditions has little margin for adverse seas or diversion. Carry appropriate lifesaving and emergency communications equipment, agree a shore contact and do not regard a smartphone as the main distress system.

Arriving at Garden Key

Fort Jefferson and the waters around Garden Key are the focus for many visitors. Private vessels must observe the park's permit, entrance-fee, anchoring and docking rules. The visitor dock is shared with scheduled ferry operations and emergency or government vessels. Recreational docking times are limited, and beach access is confined to designated locations.

The park's latest boating information sets out different arrangements for Garden Key and Loggerhead Key; notably, the Loggerhead dock is closed to private vessels. There are restrictions on underwater lights and on certain fishing activities, reflecting the area's marine and historical protection. Review the current rules before choosing an anchorage or lowering a dinghy.

A place to visit, not simply a place to reach

Once safely ashore, a visitor can explore Fort Jefferson's history and see the reefs and birdlife that make this remote park special. The best experiences leave time for quiet observation rather than racing to fit too many activities between arrival and departure.

For boaters who lack the experience or vessel for this passage, the scheduled ferry or a licensed charter is the appropriate alternative. The Dry Tortugas are extraordinary partly because they are remote. Taking that remoteness seriously is the foundation of a rewarding trip.
