Chipstead Sailing Club in Kent has been recognised for junior programmes involving about 100 active young members, using sailing to build confidence and practical skills.
Learning to sail teaches more than which rope to pull. At Chipstead Sailing Club in Kent, a busy junior programme has also become a way for young people to practise responsibility and develop friendships.
The club received the RYA Young Person’s award in 2026, with the association highlighting its long-running work. Around 100 junior members are actively involved in the community.
Volunteers make a large programme possible
The club relies on an extensive group of volunteers and family members to deliver its activities. Coaching, launch support and ordinary administration all contribute to a safe setting for young participants.
Young sailors learn from seeing adults work together as well as from instructions in the boat. They gradually gain confidence making decisions for themselves and helping others.
Confidence develops through repetition
A dinghy provides immediate feedback when someone changes course or trims a sail. Regular practice gives children opportunities to understand consequences, solve problems and persist when conditions are unfamiliar.
Those lessons carry beyond the water, though outcomes differ for every participant. A good programme recognises enjoyment and progress without demanding that each child become a competitive racer.
A family can start without ownership
Parents interested in junior sailing can ask local clubs about introductory sessions and whether training boats are provided. Buying a hull immediately is not the only way to take part.
