A Cooler Autumn Morning Calls for Layers Rather than a Longer Itinerary

Early autumn can offer quiet water and empty picnic benches, but sunshine at the launch is no promise of warmth on a moving boat. A compact motorboat outing works better when everyone has the clothing and flexibility to enjoy the return as well as the outward leg.

Dress for wind across the water

A base layer, insulating mid-layer and suitable windproof outer garment are more useful than relying on a single heavy coat. Hands and feet can become uncomfortable before the air temperature looks especially cold.

Pack dry changes sensibly

A sealed bag with spare socks and warm clothing is useful after spray or an unexpected shower. Keep loose gear secure and avoid blocking passage to the helm or safety equipment.

Clothing needs to allow boarding and movement rather than catching on fittings. A suitable lifejacket must fit over the layers actually worn.

Keep the trip weather-led

Choose sheltered water and a short distance with an easy return. Forecast wind and rain matter as much as the temperature shown on a phone.

A closed café or wet picnic bench should not force a longer voyage. Have a comfortable alternative ashore and be willing to cancel when conditions are unsuitable.

Warm up properly after landing

Allow time to dry equipment and warm up before driving home. Cleaning and inspecting the boat are easier when passengers are not cold and exhausted.
