Barcolana58 is turning Trieste into a ten-day waterfront festival, with more than 500 events connecting sailing, culture, science and the city’s seafaring identity.
Barcolana58 will spread across Trieste from 2 to 11 October with more than 500 events in over 100 locations, extending far beyond the racecourse. The official “Be Open” programme brings sailing together with art, science, music, literature, film and community events around a city whose identity is inseparable from the Adriatic.
For leisure boaters, that broader approach is part of the attraction of a major sailing week. A coastal event becomes more useful when crews, families and visitors can combine time on the water with things worth doing ashore.
More than a sailing regatta
Barcolana says its land programme will run through museums, galleries, neighbourhoods, stages and the old port as the city builds towards the Autumn Cup. The theme encourages local organisations, artists, researchers and residents to treat the sea as a starting point for culture rather than a backdrop reserved for racing.
More than 110 ideas were submitted through the open call for community events and 91 were accepted into the programme. That gives the festival a deliberately local character alongside the international sailing audience that comes to Trieste each October.
A waterfront city becomes part of the experience
