Bala OnBoard Festival Brings 70 Young Sailors Together

A junior sailing event works best when its atmosphere is welcoming to newcomers as well as regular racers. Lake Bala hosted a Welsh Sailing OnBoard Festival in August, combining time in dinghies with games and a weekend together ashore.

The event was described as sold out, with around 70 young competitors and 67 entries across the fleets. Sailors aged eight to eighteen were able to participate at different levels.

Different fleets lower the entry barrier

The entry comprised 23 in the training fleet, 29 in the junior fleet and 15 in the general fleet. Those divisions provided distinct opportunities rather than asking every participant to race at the same standard.

Coaches and volunteers supported activities through the weekend, and loan boats were available for people who did not yet have their own. That matters when equipment costs might otherwise deter a family from entering.

The shore programme is part of the experience

A festival of this kind involves more than a start gun and a results sheet. Time with other young sailors can build friendships that make returning to the water more appealing.

Families often decide whether to continue with a sport on the quality of the whole day, not solely on a child’s place in a race. Supportive adults and sensible arrangements around the launch area are therefore central to participation.

A lake can be a first sailing destination

An organised local event offers a structured way to enjoy a new venue, while the usual weather and water-safety checks remain necessary. Parents can ask a club about recognised training and borrowed equipment before buying a dinghy.
