Somers Cove Marina Starts $30m Upgrade for Chesapeake Boaters

Maryland has begun a major modernization of Somers Cove Marina in Crisfield, the state’s largest publicly owned marina. The approximately $30 million programme includes a replacement boat ramp, new floating piers, utility work and flood-mitigation infrastructure.

The marina serves as a gateway to the Chesapeake Bay and recorded more than 5,000 visiting boaters in 2025. Work began in early September and is expected to continue for roughly 18 to 24 months.

Boat ramp and eight piers will be replaced

The project includes a new boat ramp and replacement of eight of the marina’s 15 piers with floating systems. Around 2,000 feet of new bulkhead is also planned as part of the waterside rehabilitation.

For trailer-boat users, the new ramp is the most direct improvement. Marina users will also benefit from renewed electrical and water services on the piers, although access arrangements may change as construction moves through different phases.

Utilities and access form part of the rebuild

Maryland DNR says the work includes new storm drains, sewer, water and electrical infrastructure as well as an emergency generator. Parking areas will be resurfaced and ADA access improved with new sidewalks and better routes to multiple piers and slips.

Those landside improvements are important because launching and berthing depend on more than the condition of the ramp or dock itself. Reliable utilities, safe pedestrian access and vehicle circulation all affect how practical a public boating facility is to use.

Flood protection is built into the marina project

Five tide gates are being installed within a new storm-drain system to reduce tidal flooding around Somers Cove and nearby Crisfield properties. The programme also includes stormwater improvements, landscaping and environmental mitigation work.
